Banksy’s rise in popularity and value have lead to a sharp rise in reproductions of his works, with many high value prints being offered for sale on well known internet auction sites. So if your considering buying a banksy piece do your homework!
Banksy prints are now released by Pictures on Walls who are a London based gallery who represent the artist. Prints are usually issued with numbering and a Pictures on Walls blindstamp and POW will record the owners details of each print. Not all Banksy releases were/are signed. This is the case for most works but older pieces can be missing some or all of the above.
If you are thinking of buying a piece of artwork then you should ask if there is any provenance. Provenance means the origin, or the source, of something, This may be a receipt or C.O.A. (certificate of authentication). With Banksy art you can check with POW who the piece you are buying is registered to if numbered. If the piece is not numbered you can still get it’s authenticity checked. POW offer a service to check authenticity and you can contact them via their website www.picturesonwalls.com
Banksy pieces can also be authenticated via www.pestcontroloffice.com who along with POW are the only recognised people to verify his work. There is a charge for the service.
Banksy works have been sold at various locations including Santas Ghetto, Green Leaf Bookstore and TomTom Gallery to name but a few and some of these works would of come with just a receipt.
Banksy will not authenticate street pieces SO DON’T TAKE THEM! they are worthless!

Where is Banksy?
It’s been over 2 years since we last saw a Banksy print release, with that being ‘choose your weapon’ in December 2010. We were then enticed with the promise of a March 2012 release of his gorilla print which never happened. This was rumoured to be due to problems with the glitter finish of the gorillas mask, but nearly 2 years later still no gorilla. Flippers and queue jumpers were then hoping for an early christmas present, spending the night in sub zero temperatures queuing for a saturday morning release at POW. But still no new Banksy print! So where is Banksy?
Artist or Vandal?
Banksy the self dubbed Art Terrorist from Bristol has been called both an artist and a vandal, and many debates have taken place over the question “Is it Art or vandalism?”
Banksy Urban legend?, with his identity shrouded in darkness. There have been only a handful of photos alledging to be him but none have been confirmed. Due to the shroud of secrecy surrounding his real identity and his subversive character, banksy has achieved a cult following.
Banksy Unmasked at last?
Has banksy been unmasked at last? Reports in national newspapers stated that the true identity of banksy may of finally been exposed. There is an uncanny resemblance in the life of one Robin Gunningham, a public schoolboy from bristol and the infamous Mr B!
Banksy started life as a freehand street grafitti artist in bristol in the early 80’s, he was believed to be a member of the DryBreadZ Crew. He then went on to stencilling and his work started appearing in Londons streets as well as Bristols. He has since covered many different media including painting, sheep, cows and even an elephant!. His works are now very sought after, and owning an original banksy is now only a dream for most . Many of the rich and famous including hollywood A-listers Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have bought banksy’s art pushing prices sky high.
Banksy previously believed to be one Robert or Robin Banks and born in 1974/5 in Yate, Bristol.
He doesn’t do interviews very often but was interviewed in 2003 by Simon Hattenstone, a reporter for the Guardian newspaper. He described banksy as looking like a “cross between Jimmy Nail and Mike Skinner of the Streets” and turning up wearing scruffy casual jeans and t-shirt, sporting a silver tooth, silver chain and silver earring.
Banksy started doing graffiti when he was 14 years old but admits “I was quite crap with a spray can, so I started cutting out stencils instead.” He has come a long way since spraying his tag on the walls of bristol. He changed his stomping ground to Shoreditch in london where you will find lots of his work on display, to holding exhibitions in Los Angeles.
Banksy has supposedly been photographed a few times but each photo appears to be a different person to me so who knows?. The Picture to the right appeared in The Evening Standard Newspaper in 2004, and was supposedly taken by a Jamaican photographer named Peter Dean Rickards.when banksy flew to Kingston to work on a project.
The Daily Mail recently ran a story reporting that they believed Banksy to be one Robin Gunningham, a former public schoolboy. After a year long investigation the mail believe they are as close to exposing his identity as anyone has before. There are many similarities in the life of Banksy and Robin Gunningham and the story is given more credibility with the fact that no one can trace Robin Gunningham.
